Records of the Kansas Board of Railroad Commissioners, 1883 - 1911.

This collection contains the records of the Board of Railroad Commissioners. The records document the commissioners' management of all matters involving railroads throughout the state. The case files compose the largest series, containing correspondence, legal documents, and subsequent rulings on cases appearing before the board. Related to the case files are volumes of dockets and orders, summarizing all actions taken regarding such cases. The collection contains a large number of railroad tariff and timetable charts used for transporting livestock, as well as registers of livestock shipped throughout the state. General administrative records can be found as well, such as minutes and letterpress books of correspondence sent and received. Other series include charts and correspondence regarding the shipment of aid, such as food and supplies, to residents of western Kansas.

The Board of Railroad Commissioners was created in 1883 and consisted of three members appointed by the Executive Council. The board was abolished on January 11, 1899 and its duties were transferred to the Court of Visitation. The court had jurisdiction over all questions concerning the regulation of railroads and telegraph service in the State.
